Day 5: Bigger, more effective ads in 10 minutes

A couple of days ago, we skipped adding “Ad Extensions” during Campaign set up. Today, that’s what we’ll do. Ad Extensions are exactly like they sound – they extend the size of your ad – increasing the amount of information you can give to a searcher, as well as the amount of space your ad takes up at the top of the page. Both of these features increase the likelihood of your ad being clicked on.

There are several kinds of ad extensions, and you can of course learn about them/add them to your campaign as well… but for the purposes of keeping this mini-course simple, we’re just going to learn about adding one kind of extension — Sitelinks extensions. Now for the steps.

1) Click on the Ad Extensions tab, pictured here.

2) Click on the tab in the dropdown menu (pictured here) and select “Sitelinks extensions.”

3) Now click the red +Extension button, scroll down and click the gray “New sitelink” button — see here:

4) A popup will appear — here is where you can add additional URLs that people can go to, directing them to more specific interests they might have. Your main ad might take visitors to the page about your main product/service, while your sitelink extensions might take customers to additional products/services/information that are more specific or less central to your business.
You will see this screen come up. Now you are ready to write your ad.

The only fields you need to fill out in the window here are:
Link text (what someone will see as the headline of the sitelink; the words that are clickable)
Final URL (the actual URL someone is taken to if they click)
Decription (not required, but I recommend it)

On Day 1, I gave you an example of a company who appears at the top of the first page of Google (organically), and who also runs an Adwords ad. Let’s go back to that image to see how they used sitelinks extensions.

Once this step is complete, click “New Sitelink” again and add another 1-3 sitelinks. Whenever possible Google will include these extensions with your ad. This will improve the quality of the ad, and how often it is clicked on… both great things!
Tomorrow we will learn how to review your campaign and understand how effective it’s working for you. This is perhaps the most important step – if you don’t know whether the campaign is working, you can’t improve it!
